We finally met the Legend........

Dr. Frederick Shaw!  Ever since we arrived in Chandigarh, we have heard about this man and his work in preventive medicine in the bustees.  His organization is the NGO known as DIR, Developing Indigenous Resources.  The recent Hans Raj Hans Concert supported by UFV Chandigarh was a fundraiser for this organization.

Stacy, Adam and Kathryn have been working with Dr. Shaw and his staff visiting homes in Janta Colony with the healthcare workers and also distributing mini gardens and teaching residents (and children in the school) about nutrition and growing their own food.
Dr. Shaw was born in Ireland, now has a home and family in California, but has spent the last 7 or 8 years here in India.  Prior to that, he worked on a similar project in Pakistan and his model has been carried on by the government of that country.

He is over 80 years old.  Unbelievable!  Unfortunately, he was one of the people who contracted dengue fever and is just now recovering.
So, today, Stacy had the great suggestion that we go out for lunch with Dr. Shaw.  It was time for us to meet this legend and we enjoyed his company very much.

We chose our favourite restaurant (when we want to have western food, that is), Flamme Bois Bistro.

George and I each ordered the tuna sandwich and this is what we each got!

Triple decker on bread that was at least 6 inches square!  Luckily, others were kind enough to share.

I am sure we will have many more opportunities to talk with Dr. Shaw while we are here.  He is a good friend of UFV Chandigarh and the Canadian Consulate so will be involved in some of the future events.

My plan is to skip class at UFV one day soon and visit the bustee.

Stacy's second good idea of the day was to go to the spa.  So, we two deserving women went off to Headmasters.

I had a very relaxing facial and massage.  Stacy had a pedicure and an "interesting" hair trim.

Another first for me!  A ride home in a tuk tuk, or auto-rickshaw.  This is a quick and inexpensive way to get around the city.  I didn't take any chances, though, and held on tight.

It is getting to the time in our adventure here when we must sit down and make the list of all things we still want to do and see.

Tomorrow, we have been invited to join the Anand family on a visit to the Khalsa Heritage Centre--a spot definitely on the list.
